Providing a residential camping experience for people with disabilities for 59 years

Camp Summit was created in 1993 to assume management of the residential camping program for people with disabilities, established by Soroptimist International of Dallas in 1947. Since 1993, we have seen a 50% increase in the number of campers.

The mission of Camp Summit is to provide a residential camping experience for children, youth and adults with disabilities in order to broaden their life experiences and increase their independence and social skills. Our campers range in age from six to adulthood and may be developmentally delayed, physically challenged, dual sensory impaired (deaf and blind) or have multiple disabilities.

Our programming consists of ten one-week summer camping sessions each year from May through August and weekend sessions in the fall and spring.  Agencies and organizations can book special programs year-round through our A.C.O.R.N. (Agency Cooperative Outdoor Recreational Network) program.

We are located in Argyle, Texas, just north of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex on 117 acres of land.  We are a United Way partner agency, accredited by the American Camping Association and licensed as a Youth Camp in the State of Texas.  We are one of approximately a dozen camps in the nation that accept participants, regardless of the severity of their physical, developmental or multiple disabilities.

As our name implies, our goal is to help children and adults with disabilities reach their own personal peak by providing recreational, therapeutic and social activities in an authentically natural camp setting. The benefits of our camping program are endless!  Campers are encouraged to try new experiences in order to gain self-confidence, increase personal independence and learn cooperation. Activities include swimming, horseback riding, performing arts, a ropes challenge course, wilderness and nature study, arts and crafts, fishing, games, camping and group activities.  All activities are adapted to each individual camper’s ability.

Our programming not only benefits the camper, but also provides families with a much needed period of respite.

If you are interested in learning more or visiting our campgrounds please contact the Dallas Office.  We would be happy to answer any questions you might have.
